Welcome to Medicine Hat Mediator. My name is Miles Thorson, let me introduce myself.
I come to mediation through the education profession. I have been a teacher for over 20 years, mostly in the field of Special Education. Towards the end of my teaching career, I moved from teaching students to counselling students. There, I found a niche. I absolutely loved helping students and parents deal with issues and problems. I earned a MS of Psychology, a Qualified Mediator designation plus Divorce/Separation Mediator training. From there, I entered into the world of mediation full time.
I mediate a variety conflicts: family, civil and small claims to family business. The conflicts may be different but they do have things in common. People are in conflict, with others as well as within themselves. They feel bad. They may feel confused, angry, bitter; a range of emotions. But I do find that the most important thing that people need is to be heard. To have the chance to “tell their story”. That’s where I find get my most satisfaction.
I want to help people focus on the future, not the past. I want to encourage people to feel empowered. I want to guide people towards helpful actions that will result in positive resolution. I want to show people that their situation can change for the better; it is not always easy, but it is possible. These are the reasons why I choose to mediate disputes and conflicts.
Let me know what you think. If you have any questions, please contact me. I would love to hear from you.
